Gunnison is located 200 mi (322 km) from Denver and 180 mi (290 km) from Colorado Springs. Bordered by forests, rivers, lakes and the Rocky Mountains, this area supports exciting summer and winter activities such as skiing, camping, hiking and hunting. The Arkansas River flows near Gunnison and provides an opportunity for thrilling activities, such as whitewater rafting and windsurfing, as well as some exceptional areas for fly-fishing. Every July, Gunnison hosts Colorado—s oldest rodeo, Cattleman—s Days, featuring a county fair, parade, carnival, live music. dancing and of course, rodeo events. Besides its cowboy heritage, Gunnison provides other cultural experiences through the Gunnison Arts Center, Kathleen—s Pottery Studio and the Johnson Building Gallery. Visitors cannot miss one of the largest lakes in Colorado, Blue Mesa Lake, which is home to brown and rainbow trout and salmon, making it an attractive place for fishing, as well as other sports such as boating and waterskiing.
